FAQs
Questions about doing business in the UAE
Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Rules change, so treat these as general guidance — we confirm the details for your situation.
Setting up a company
Can a foreigner own 100% of a UAE company?
In most cases, yes. Free zone companies can be fully foreign-owned, and most mainland activities can now be too. A short list of strategic activities still has conditions, and some professional licences may need a local service agent.
What is the difference between mainland and free zone?
A mainland company is licensed by the emirate’s economic department and can trade anywhere in the UAE. A free zone company is licensed by a free zone authority, usually with lighter office requirements, but selling directly to mainland customers needs a distributor, a branch or a permit.
How much does it cost to set up a company?
It depends on the jurisdiction, activity, office, number of visas and shareholder structure. We give you a breakdown for your case — including which parts are government fees — before you commit.
How long does it take?
Simple licences can be issued quickly; activities that need external approvals take longer. Processing times are set by the authorities, and we give you a realistic estimate once we know your plans.
Do I need a physical office?
Mainland companies normally need a registered office (Ejari in Dubai). Many free zones offer flexi-desk options. The office you choose also affects your visa allocation.
Can I run the company from outside the UAE?
Yes, many owners do. Some steps, such as signing before a notary or completing a residence visa, need you in the UAE or a power of attorney.
Visas and Emirates ID
Does owning a company give me a residence visa?
Company owners can usually apply for an investor or partner residence visa through their company once its immigration file is set up. Eligibility depends on the jurisdiction and the authority.
Is the residence visa still stamped in the passport?
No. Since 2022 the Emirates ID serves as proof of residence instead of a passport sticker.
What salary do I need to sponsor my family?
Generally at least AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, together with the authority’s document requirements.
Who decides Golden Visa eligibility?
The UAE authorities. Categories include investors, entrepreneurs, people with exceptional talents and outstanding students; we can help you check which may apply.
Banking and tax
Can you guarantee a bank account?
No. Banks decide each application under UAE Central Bank rules. We prepare a complete file and approach suitable banks to give you the best chance.
Does every company need to register for Corporate Tax?
Yes, including free zone companies and companies expecting to pay 0%. New companies should register within three months of incorporation; late registration can lead to an AED 10,000 penalty.
What is the Corporate Tax rate?
0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% above it. Qualifying Free Zone Persons can pay 0% on qualifying income if they meet strict conditions.
When must I register for VAT?
When taxable supplies and imports pass AED 375,000 in 12 months, or are expected to within 30 days. Voluntary registration is possible from AED 187,500.
What is a Tax Residency Certificate?
A certificate from the Federal Tax Authority confirming UAE tax residence, used to claim benefits under double taxation agreements. Companies and individuals must meet the FTA’s eligibility tests.
Documents
Does the UAE accept apostilled documents?
Not as a replacement for legalisation. The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so foreign documents need embassy legalisation and UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation.
Who can translate documents for UAE courts?
Legal translators registered with the UAE Ministry of Justice. We arrange certified translations.
What does a corporate shareholder need to provide?
Usually its certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles, a board resolution approving the UAE company and a power of attorney — legalised and attested for the UAE.
